the joys of power outages

I guess it was New Years or the 31st- the power in my neighborhood went out. Oddly enough, my DSL modem completely reset.

I called SBC tech support and in the process of telling them “No, I am NOT going to reboot my computer or disconnect my router” I remembered I change my password on my email (which apparently changes the PPPoE login too – grrr). I told the tech 3 – yes THREE – times that the Internet light on my modem isn’t on, and I’m in the modem’s web interface. It’s not the computer or the router. Yeah, I told tech support NO. He didn’t seem to know what to do when I knew what I was doing…

Webbed into my modem, set the PPPoE up again, and threw it into bridge mode once again (the only way NAT to XBox Live will work) . However, there’s something different – the “Internet” light on my modem isn’t on anymore. And, my router is setup to use PPP0E – I didn’t have to do this last time, so apparently, when I “hacked” my setup so I didn’t have to load all the SBC Yahoo DSL crap on my computer, my modem got confusicated.

Now, my connection is STABLE, I can stay VPNed into work with no issue and on meebo without getting bumped. So, every now and then – a reset is a GOOD thing 🙂
