Response to Tim Wildmon, PTC and the 1/7 AFA alert

I received this in my inbox yesterday:

January 7, 2009

Dear Michael,

The Fox broadcast network featured bestiality on the program American Dad that aired over your public airwaves on Sunday night, January 3rd. But that’s not the worst of it. The network chose one of the most popular animated children’s programs (according to the Parents Television Council) to spew their toxic perversion and sickening content. Keep in mind that this program’s popularity ranges primarily from children 2-11 years old.

I apologize about the explicit content of this alert but you must know about what happened and file a formal complaint now with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)! We must demand that the agency which is responsible for the enforcement of our broadcast decency law do its job.

..

If you believe that the bestiality content aired in this program is indecent and violates the federal broadcast decency law then we urgently need you to take action now. Unless you act this kind of material could become the acceptable norm for television.

While I usually look and ignore these, I must raise a 2 specific counter points about the content of this article.

First and foremost, American Dad, is not, and should not be considered as a “family show.” Any one who some level of intelligence knows there are different targets for animation.  Disney – usually family ok.  Pixar – always family ok.  Dreamworks – mostly family ok.  Fox Sunday night – ADULTS ONLY.  Cartoon Network AFTER 10pm aka [adult swim] – ADULTS ONLY.  You see?  Too many uninformed lump animation into “it’s ALL ok for kids.”   The most “opposite” of this idea is Anime.  It’s animation, and it’s not meant for kids – a la Akira – one of the most celebrated and famous Anime movies – NOT meant for kids.  That idea has entered into American animation for a while, yet some refuse to realize it.

This bring me to my second point.  Censorship.  In the home.  Parents being PARENTS.  I do it in my house.  I, nor my kids, watch The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill, or Futurama.   Even as a geek, I’m often reminded of “what I’m missing” by not watching South Park, Robot Chicken, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.  About the other thing I really liked in this forte was Afro Samurai, mainly because Samuel L Jackson is a bad#%^ and I like stories about ninjas and samurai. I watched it, no kids around, and promptly deleted it off my DVR.  My DVR has a password for anything over a “G” rating.  Kids know they have to ask to watch what I don’t approve.  This is me acting on the fact that as parents, we have to stop using the TV as a babysitter and pay attention to what our kids see.  I heard a stat that 30% of kids in JUNIOR HIGH are sexting.  Where do they learn that from?  Friends, and what every sees on screen.

In fact, the Parent Television Council, on their front page, has a call to file with the FCC against  “Fox’s American Dad Features Man Masturbating a Horse”. In fact, the PTC lists American Dad as a red – or ADULTS ONLY – show.  I can’t find a “popular children’s cattoons” list – but I do find that the PTC is all about getting kids off the TV and controlling what they watch.

What an amazing concept.  Maybe AFA should alert on that little nugget.
